Dutch charter airline, TUI Fly has resumed operations in East Africa after six-year hiatus. The airline had halted flights toward the end of 2019 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The resumption at Mombasa’s Moi International Airport, marks a significant boost for Kenya’s tourism sector. This renewed connection aligns with global tourism’s gradual recovery, underscoring Kenya’s strategic importance and efforts to revive its coastal appeal.

Promoting tourism

Operating twice weekly, TUI Fly’s flights primarily serve European tourists, attracted by Mombasa’s cultural charm, beautiful beaches, and safari experiences. TUI Fly’s use of a Boeing 787 for the route highlights its commitment to facilitating a seamless and enjoyable travel experience for visitors to Kenya’s coast. Captain Robert Gijsbertse of TUI Fly remarked on the country’s allure for European tourists, with its blend of adventure, nature, and world-class accommodations.

Local tourism authorities, including Coast Regional Manager for the Kenya Airports Authority Abel Gogo and Mombasa County’s Executive for Tourism Mohammed Osman, celebrated this development. They acknowledged the joint efforts of local and national stakeholders, including the government’s support, in reinstating TUI Fly’s flights.

Gogo pointed out the economic ripple effect expected from the increase in international tourists, while Osman emphasized Mombasa’s potential as an international destination. Osman highlighted initiatives like the “open sky” policy, aimed at attracting more international airlines, which would drive competition, potentially reduce airfare, and enhance Mombasa’s global appeal.

As Kenya aims to raise the percentage of international visitors entering through Mombasa, the TUI Fly resumption is a step toward the coastal city’s transformation into a premier global destination. With ongoing improvements in travel facilities and security, Mombasa is positioned to reclaim and expand its share of international tourism.
