The Tanzania Ports Authority has announced it has acquires a 490 hectares of land to develop a dry port in Dodoma. The move aims at enhancing trade and logistics infrastructure in the country.
According to Plasduce Mbossa, director general of Tanzania Ports Authority, the Ihumwa Dry Port aims to serve as an export hub and improve the efficiency of transport and trade for central regions. It will be coupled up with railway and maritime upgrades, these developments aim to establish Tanzania as a key trade hub.
Boost in logistics
Additionally, the Kwala dry port is set to be expanded to reduce congestion at the Port of Dar es Salaam. Kwala, 105km from Dar es Salaam, has improved traffic flow, and its Phase II development is set for 2024/25. He added that Kwala acts as a Dar es Salaam extension, facilitating customs, reducing delays, and offering multi-modal options.
In 2024, Kwala handled 300,000 containers, 30% of Dar es Salaam’s volume, which reduced congestion by 70%. Mbossa noted ongoing dry port development will boost logistics and trade, increase storage, and improve transport. By 2030, Kwala’s capacity is expected to reach 500,000 containers with growing regional demand.
Landlocked countries like Zambia, DRC, Burundi, and Rwanda are securing spaces at these facilities. These projects are supported by Tanzania’s broader initiatives, such as: Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) development and upgraded maritime training systems. These initiatives reflect a transformative approach to addressing regional logistics challenges and leveraging Tanzania’s geographical advantage to foster economic growth.
