South African Airways (SAA) is scaling up its operations ahead of the peak holiday season by adding three more Airbus A320 aircraft to its fleet, increasing the total number of A320s to five.
The first of these aircraft was delivered on September 25, with the remaining two set to arrive monthly thereafter. These additions aim to meet heightened demand during the holiday period. SAA currently operates a fleet of seven Airbus aircraft; two A320s, three A319s, an A330-300, and an A340-300.

In response to rising passenger numbers, SAA has also increased aircraft size on two of its busiest routes: Cape Town and Harare. The Harare-Johannesburg route now includes three daily frequencies serviced by the larger A330 aircraft.
The airline plans to retire its A319 fleet by 2023, signaling a move towards streamlining and modernizing its operations. The A340-300, which currently serves as a support aircraft during fleet maintenance or capacity surges, will be replaced by an aircraft with similar capacity.
SAA Executive Chairman John Lamola emphasized that the additional capacity aims to balance supply and demand, which in turn affects ticket pricing. COO Tebogo Tsimane highlighted the success of SAA’s cautious approach to re-entering markets after the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that this strategy will continue as the airline grows its network.
This fleet expansion reflects SAA’s focus on enhancing its operational flexibility and capacity to accommodate growing passenger volumes while maintaining a balanced and risk-adjusted growth trajectory.
