The Rhenus Group, a global logistics leader, has launched a new facility in Meadowview, Johannesburg, South Africa. The move that aims to enhance efficiency and supports future growth in the region.

This new 28,000-square-metre site, featuring a 24,500-square-metre warehouse and 3,000-square-metre office space, doubles the company’s capacity and consolidates its operations previously spread across three buildings in Longmeadow.

Features

Strategically located near OR Tambo International Airport and the City Deep Container Terminal, the R440 million facility ensures minimal disruption to current operations and customer proximity. It incorporates advanced sustainability features, including a 500kW solar power system with 1,600 panels, an 800W lithium-ion battery plant, and rainwater harvesting systems with a 120,000-litre capacity. A 1.1-million-litre stormwater tank and a 40,000-litre fire sprinkler reservoir further bolster its eco-friendly credentials.

The warehouse is tailored for high-tech logistics solutions, boasting a 1,300-square-metre refrigeration area with a -20°C section and 100 deep-freeze units, a feature unique in South Africa. It can store 25,000 industrial-standard pallets and offers 1,600 positions for lithium-ion batteries, making it fully compliant for this cargo type. Additionally, the facility has a 250-square-metre secure vault for high-value goods.

Cornell van Rooyen, CEO of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions MEA, highlighted the operational efficiencies and future readiness of the new facility. Dirk Goedhart, Managing Director of Rhenus Air & Ocean South Africa, emphasized the customized design and integration across Rhenus Group’s divisions, boosting productivity and customer service.

The investment aligns with the company’s growth strategy, creating jobs and implementing training programs for its workforce. It underscores Rhenus Group’s confidence in South Africa’s market potential and its commitment to sustainable and innovative logistics solutions.
