The Port of Huelva is set to enhance trade between Spain and Morocco with the launch of a new maritime route to Tangier Med Port. Operated by Spanish shipping company Suardiaz Group in collaboration with GTO (Grupo Transonuba), this service will provide six weekly rotations focused on roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) freight transport.
With a swift six-hour transit time, the route is expected to streamline the movement of dry goods, refrigerated cargo, and hazardous materials (IMO-classified), improving supply chain efficiency between Europe and North Africa.
Boost in trade links
This new connection marks a strategic milestone for the Port of Huelva by strengthening trade links with Morocco and enhancing intermodal transport options. Alberto Santana, President of the Port of Huelva, highlighted the port’s investment in infrastructure, including a newly constructed double boarding ramp designed to improve handling capacity for freight operators. Esteban Sánchez, President of GTO, emphasized that the route will provide a reliable solution to accommodate increasing commercial traffic, which is anticipated to double over the next five years.
According to Marcos Duato, Director of Suardiaz Shipping Lines, the partnership with GTO reflects a commitment to meeting the growing demand for efficient and dependable freight transport between Europe and Africa. The new route is expected to reinforce Morocco’s role as a key logistics hub in the region while boosting economic growth on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. By improving maritime transport efficiency and reducing transit times, the connection supports broader sustainability goals and strengthens Euro-African trade relations.
