Phase one works of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line in Nigeria has been completed. Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu confirmed the report.
The Lagos Rail Mass Transit is a rapid transit system being developed and under construction in Lagos State. The rail system is being managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). The railway equipment including electric power, signals, rolling stock, and fare collection equipment will be provided by the private sector under a concession contract. LAMATA is responsible for policy direction, regulation, and infrastructure for the network.

The first section of the network, Phase I of the Blue Line, was originally planned to be completed in 2011, though the construction has suffered many delays caused by shortage of funds and change of government. The completion of the first phase includes a 13 km stretch of rail as well as five stations and marks an important milestone in the delivery of the entire 27 km long Blue Line which will run between Okokomaiko and Marina.
Electricity required to power the line will be delivered by a single, stand-alone power plant and will be ready for passenger operations in the first quarter of 2023. Three train sets for operations on the line are reportedly already on the ground.
This first phase will transport 250,000 passengers daily and, when completed, the entire 27km will transport about 500,000 passengers daily. Each train comprises four coaches and each coach can take up to 180 passengers conveniently. The rail project, Governor said, will enhance rapidity in movement and unlock more economic prosperity for the state.
