The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), is seeking the need to review the implementation of the International Ships and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code to enhance the security of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

Speaking at the 2024 National Conference of the Port Facility Security Officers Forum of Nigeria, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of NPA highlighted the critical role maritime security plays in international trade, national interests, and the safety of maritime stakeholders.

ISPS Code

Enacted in 2004, the ISPS Code has been instrumental in addressing security threats such as terrorism, piracy, and illicit trafficking. The Code has fortified the security framework of Nigeria’s ports, fostering international confidence and positioning Nigeria as a reliable maritime hub.

Significant investments have been made to upgrade port facilities and introduce advanced security measures. Training programs for security personnel have also been prioritized to ensure compliance and proactive threat management. Collaborative efforts among stakeholders—NPA, federal and state agencies, port operators, security services, and international partners—have been pivotal.

Dr. Dantsoho advocates for a reassessment of the Code’s implementation to address modern security challenges in a rapidly evolving maritime domain. The review aims to integrate proactive and innovative solutions, ensuring Nigerian ports remain resilient and secure while supporting sustainable development.

The maritime industry faces increasing complexity in security risks, requiring nations to adapt to new global standards. The proposed review underscores Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining its status as a key player in global maritime trade.

“As we reflect on the past two decades, we are reminded of the critical role that maritime security plays in facilitating international trade, protecting our national interests and ensuring the safety of seafarers, port workers and the environment,” said Dr. Dantsoho.
