The Federal government of Nigeria is to commission the first rail wagon assembly plant in West Africa. Minister of Transportation, Alhaji Mua’zu Jaji Sambo revealed the plans and said apart from reducing the foreign exchange required to import fully built-up wagons into the country, the assembly plant will enhance technology transfer and create job opportunities for many Nigerians.
Construction of the plant in Kajola, Ogun broke grounds in 2019. It is part of efforts to boost federal government’s ongoing railway modernisation programme with local production of rolling stock. The plant which is a private investment was developed by Messers CCECC, and is central in the production of rolling stock, spare parts and maintenance of equipment needed for the railway modernisation programme being implemented by this administration.
