The Federal government of Nigeria has officially launched the dualization of a significant 1,068-kilometer road project in Illela, Sokoto State. This road, beginning in Illela town and extending through seven states—Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos—has been awarded to Hitech Construction Company Limited.
Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway Project
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu at the launch, highlighted the project’s importance as part of his administration’s infrastructural goals. Governor Aliyu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu and Minister of Works Senator David Umahi for prioritizing the project and assured that the Sokoto State government would support its completion by ensuring security for all personnel involved. He also expressed appreciation for the President’s broader support, including recent fertilizer and food relief initiatives for the state.
Minister of Works David Umahi emphasized the project’s role as part of a broader initiative to upgrade over 3,000 kilometers of road across Nigeria, with a balanced focus on both northern and southern regions.
He noted that this superhighway, first proposed by President Shehu Shagari nearly 48 years ago, will feature a six-lane design aimed at easing traffic congestion and will include solar-powered streetlights, CCTV cameras, and other modern amenities to meet global standards. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, expressed appreciation to the federal government, noting the project’s importance for both Sokoto and the nation.
