Morocco is embarking on a transformative journey in its railway sector with plans to construct a state-of-the-art train manufacturing plant.

Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh revealed the plans and said the strategic project, aimed at supporting the National Railways Office (ONCF) and expanding export opportunities across Africa, aligns with Morocco’s broader ambitions to enhance its rail infrastructure and establish itself as a regional transport leader.

Made in Morocco trains

The new facility will supply rolling stock to ONCF and support export markets, driving regional trade integration. It complements Morocco’s goal to produce “Made in Morocco” trains, reducing reliance on imports and fostering a competitive domestic industry.

Backed by a substantial investment of US $8.5 billion, the high-speed rail network (TGV) will be extended. A TGV line from Kenitra to Marrakech is projected to cut travel time to three hours, significantly boosting connectivity.

Plans to add 1,300 kilometers of high-speed rail and 3,800 kilometers of standard lines. The network will expand from 23 to 43 cities, improving rail access for 87% of the population, compared to 51% currently. Ten regional transport hubs will be established to facilitate urban and rural connectivity.

With improved service quality, passenger numbers are expected to grow from 53 million in 2023 to 55 million by the end of 2024. At InnoTrans 2024, Morocco TraIndustry (MTI) president Mohammed Smouni emphasized the cluster’s role in fostering domestic production and economic growth. This initiative underscores Morocco’s vision of becoming a hub for advanced railway manufacturing in Africa.

These developments signify a major leap in Morocco’s transport strategy, with the potential to strengthen economic ties within Africa, enhance mobility for its citizens, and position Morocco as a leader in sustainable and efficient rail transport solutions.
