Maersk has secured agreements with three shipyards for the construction of 20 container vessels featuring dual-fuel engines, which align with the company’s sustainability goals and fleet renewal program.

These vessels will collectively add 300,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) capacity and are equipped with liquified gas dual-fuel propulsion systems, designed to reduce emissions and support the shift to greener shipping.

The vessels will have a capacity range from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU and are powered by dual-fuel engines capable of running on liquified natural gas (LNG) and potentially other low-emission fuels. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2028, with the last expected by 2030. These vessels will replace older ships as part of the fleet renewal strategy.

Enhancing sustainability

The orders will be from; Yangzijiang Shipbuilding who will provide two ships, 12 vessels from Hanwha Ocean and New Times Shipbuilding, and six ships from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. Maersk’s ongoing fleet renewal program, initiated in 2021, aims to refresh approximately 160,000 TEU of capacity annually. This initiative supports the company’s goal to modernize its fleet with energy-efficient and sustainable vessels.

Maersk is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing sustainability by equipping its new vessels with dual-fuel engines. This investment builds on previous steps like retrofitting the Maersk Halifax with a dual-fuel methanol engine.

Alongside the 20 new vessels, Maersk plans to charter more dual-fuel ships, adding another 500,000 TEU capacity to its fleet. These chartered vessels will also support lower-emission operations using methanol and liquified gas.

Anda Cristescu, Maersk’s head of chartering and newbuilding, emphasized the alignment of these orders with the company’s decarbonization ambitions, stating, “These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and our commitment to operate on lower-emissions fuels.”

This initiative reinforces Maersk’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping while ensuring long-term operational efficiency and regulatory compliance in a rapidly evolving industry.
