Construction works on Lot 5 of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) in Tanzania, covering the Mwanza-Isaka section, has reached 63.04% completion. This progress was confirmed by the Minister of Transport, Prof. Makame Mbarawa, during an inspection visit to Malampaka Town in the Simiyu region.

Prof. Mbarawa highlighted that a significant portion of the work has already been completed and assured that efforts are being made to finalize the remaining 37%. He also emphasized that construction activities will continue despite rainy weather conditions.

Economic growth

Once completed, the SGR section is expected to drive economic growth, particularly in the Lake Region, by improving transportation efficiency. The government remains committed to ensuring the project is completed swiftly to benefit the public.

Project Manager Moga Kulwa stated that the construction is progressing well, with only minor tasks, such as the installation of railway loopers, remaining. However, Tanzanian Railway Corporation (TRC) Director General Masanja Kadogosa noted that construction had been temporarily halted due to heavy rainfall. He added that measures are in place to resume work at a faster pace starting in April.

The Mwanza-Isaka SGR section consists of a 249-kilometer main railway line along with 92 kilometers of passing loops. The project, undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and CRCC, is valued at approximately $1.321 billion. Upon completion, it is expected to enhance trade and transportation by facilitating the movement of goods between the Lake Zone and the Port of Dar es Salaam.
