The Mombasa Container Terminal (MCT) has achieved the Green Terminal label, becoming the first inland container depot in Kenya and the East Africa region to earn this prestigious certification, awarded by Bureau Veritas. This makes MCT the 13th terminal in the Africa Global Logistics (AGL) network to receive this distinction, highlighting AGL’s commitment to sustainability in logistics.

MCT, located in Mombasa, is a vital trade gateway for East Africa, handling diverse goods like agricultural products, machinery, consumer goods, and raw materials. It facilitates trade across continents, playing a central role in regional and global supply chains.

Role played for achievement

This label is based on concrete initiatives, such as the adoption of sustainable practices, ambitious waste reduction programs, as well as the use of cleaner technologies, aimed at reducing carbon emissions.  The certification aligns with AGL’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and support greener supply chains. The efforts also aim to help clients achieve their environmental objectives while promoting responsible logistics in Africa.

Jason Reynard, Regional Managing Director of AGL East Africa, expressed pride in MCT’s achievement, emphasizing its role in enhancing operational efficiency while addressing environmental concerns. This milestone reflects AGL’s broader mission of placing sustainability at the forefront of its operations across Africa.

“We are extremely proud to be the first labelled terminal in Kenya and the region, having been audited by Bureau Veritas,” said Jason Reynard.

This certification underscores MCT’s position as a leader in sustainable logistics and its contribution to a greener future for the logistics industry in Kenya and East Africa. The terminal serves as a model for how responsible practices can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship.
