The Kenyan government is planning significant upgrades to key road infrastructure to improve traffic flow and boost connectivity. In Nairobi, the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced plans to upgrade the Syokimau-Katani Road to bitumen standards.

This project aims to ease congestion on Mombasa Road. As part of the redevelopment, the government will acquire three parcels of land covering approximately 0.0921 hectares. Affected residents have been invited to the assistant chief’s office in Syokimau sub-location on February 21, 2025, to initiate the compensation process. The National Land Commission (NLC) has assured fair compensation to all impacted landowners, urging them to submit their claims and necessary documents before the inquiry date.

Compensation

In Nyeri County, the government intends to acquire 85 parcels of land totaling 1.7 hectares to facilitate the construction of the Giakanja-Tetu Mission (D434) and Kagogi-Ihwa-Ihururu-B5 Junction Roads. Similarly, in Meru County, 76 parcels of land covering 0.7 hectares will be acquired for the Kithurune-Kariene-Kaguma-Giaki and Coca-Cola-Mpuri-Kithaku-Kateri Roads projects.

Affected landowners in Meru have been advised to visit the Kariene Chief’s Office on April 1, 2025, to present their compensation claims. The government remains committed to ensuring a smooth and transparent compensation process for all affected parties. Road logistics in Kenya, encompassing the movement of goods via trucks and other vehicles, is a crucial aspect of the Kenyan economy.

Currently, Syokimau Airport Road has completed drainage works and has been tarmacked up to 50%. When complete these road networks will connect Syokimau and Katani to the neighbouring areas including Utawala, Ruai, and the neighbourhoods situated Kangundo Road, Mlolongo and Athi River and create speedier access to the Eastern Bypass spurring even greater growth.
