The Gatanga Highway project in Kenya has resumed construction after a two-year hiatus due to funding constraints. This highway represents a significant milestone in improving Kenya’s road infrastructure and fostering economic growth in the region.
The 68 km highway is set to connect Gatakaini in Gatanga to Njabiini in Nyandarua County. Henan Highway Engineering Group (Chinese construction firm) is developing the project whose total cost is estimated to be US $24million.The project targets employment of nearly 100 skilled workers for construction, boosting local livelihoods.
Benefits
Upon completion, the road project is expected to enhance business activities in Murang’a and Nyandarua Counties. It will also boost tourism potential in the Aberdare Forest region. This will open room for investors to develop hotels and other ventures.
The highway will shortened journey for commuters traveling to Rift Valley via Gatarua and Thika Superhighway, reducing travel distance by hundreds of kilometers.it will also create easier access through Kinyona in Kigumo.
Leonard Kipkoech, Foreman representing Henan Highway Engineering Group emphasized the road’s transformative impact on reducing travel time and improving access to Nakuru. Jiang Junfeng the Company Director highlighted Henan Highway Engineering Group’s ongoing collaboration with Kenya’s national government on nine additional road projects. Residents have also welcomed the resumption of the project, expressing optimism about the anticipated economic and social benefits.
“This road will ease the lives of residents by making it easier to move and reduce the time taken by motorists travelling to and from Nakuru,” said Leonard Kipkoech.
