Kenya has recorded significant growth in cargo throughput at the Port of Mombasa from January to September 2024, handling a total of 29.92 million tons—a 12.1% increase compared to the 26.68 million tons recorded during the same period in 2023.
Container traffic notably surged, with the port processing 1.5 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units), a 22.7% rise from 2023’s 1.2 million TEUs. Transshipment traffic grew dramatically by 162.8%, adding 216,339 TEUs.
Growth in import and export
Imports and exports also saw steady increases, with imports rising by 5.2% (27,656 TEUs) and exports by 4.3% (22,273 TEUs). Transit cargo volumes increased by 17.6%, reaching 9.83 million tons, with Uganda driving this growth, contributing 1.13 million additional tons, a 21.9% increase.
KPA Managing Director William Ruto credited this performance to the dedication of port workers and stakeholders. In September alone, the port handled 3.4 million tons, a 23.6% rise from 2023. The increase in containerized cargo and liquid bulk, which grew by 27.6% and 54.7% respectively, were major contributors to this growth. Ruto emphasized the port’s commitment to enhancing services to meet growing demand and support regional economic development.
