Kenya Railways has introduced specialized Reefer wagons to enhance the transportation of perishable goods to the Port of Mombasa. The introduction aligns with country’s broader strategy to establish a Cool Logistics Corridor, designed to improve the transportation of perishable goods across East Africa
These wagons are designed to maintain the freshness of temperature-sensitive cargo, such as fresh produce, throughout the journey. The goods will be collected from Fresh Produce Consolidation Centres and transported via rail to Mombasa, where they will be shipped to markets in Europe and other destinations. This development aims to strengthen Kenya’s role in the horticulture sector by streamlining the logistics of exporting fresh produce.
Advanced technology
The new wagons feature advanced technology, including real-time temperature monitoring systems, ensuring that the cargo remains in optimal condition during transit. This initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and increase the competitiveness of Kenyan horticultural exports in international markets.
Reefer wagons have evolved from using ice for cooling to more sophisticated methods, such as diesel or electric-powered refrigeration units. Some modern systems also incorporate cryogenic cooling using liquid nitrogen or carbon dioxide, while hybrid models combine mechanical refrigeration with alternative cooling techniques for enhanced efficiency. The adoption of these advanced technologies by Kenya Railways reflects a commitment to improving supply chain efficiency and supporting the growth of the agricultural sector.
