Kenya is set to expand fiber optic network across the Western region. The National Fiber Optic Cable Backbone Infrastructure project has so far have institutions successfully linked to the network, with plans to connect an additional 377 sites by 2025.

Digital connectivity

In Bungoma County, 83 institutions are currently benefiting from improved internet access. The initiative aims to expand this reach by adding 116 more sites next year, further boosting digital accessibility in the county.

Busia County has also seen significant progress, with 50 institutions already connected. By 2025, 81 additional sites are set to be linked, strengthening the county’s digital infrastructure. Similarly, Vihiga County has witnessed advancements, with 54 institutions currently utilizing the fiber optic network. Plans are in place to connect another 52 sites next year, ensuring broader access to digital resources and services.

Kakamega County stands out as the most connected in the region, with 91 institutions already linked to the network. The project aims to further expand its coverage by adding 128 more sites in 2025, setting a new standard for digital connectivity in western Kenya.
