IATA has launched the Air Cargo Device Assessment Programme to validate tracking devices, data loggers, and sensors for compliance with industry safety standards.
The initiative ensures secure air cargo transport and promotes global consistency in device approval, addressing the increasing demand for reliable services in sectors like pharmaceuticals, perishables, electronics, and high-value goods. These industries depend on battery-powered devices to monitor shipment integrity during transportation.
Air Cargo Device Assessment Programme
The program validates compliance with IATA’s Recommended Practice 1693, which covers electromagnetic compatibility and battery safety, ensuring devices meet strict safety criteria. Approved device information is accessible via ONE Source, providing a centralised platform for stakeholders.
The programme’s inaugural validation was granted to THE BOX, a reusable packaging solution by LivingPackets Group. COO Denis Mourrain highlighted that IATA validation enables universal acceptance across the air cargo industry.
Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo, emphasised the programme’s significance, stating it ensures shippers can rely on devices that comply with stringent industry standards, supporting the secure delivery of sensitive shipments. The initiative is expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of air cargo operations, particularly for time- and temperature-sensitive goods, reducing waste and preserving shipment integrity.
“The fastest-growing segments of air cargo are pharmaceuticals, perishables, electronics, and high-value goods. Shippers rely on various battery-powered electronic devices to monitor these sensitive shipments to ensure their integrity. The IATA Air Cargo Device Assessment will confirm that these devices comply with strict industry safety standards,” said Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s Global Head of Cargo.
