The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with McDan Group to boost Ghana’s marine transport and logistics capabilities.

The partnership aims to develop the “ElectroChem Terminal, Port of Ada” on the Volta River, focusing primarily on managing and exporting bulk natural and processed salts. The terminal will help streamline the export process, reduce logistics costs, and enhance Ghana’s salt production and export potential.

McDan Group, through its subsidiary ElectroChem Ghana Limited, is involved in salt mining and production. Its partnership with GPHA, which manages Ghana’s ports, comes as McDan seeks a more efficient solution to transport salt, addressing the challenges of road haulage to Tema Port. The terminal is expected to provide a direct route to international markets via marine transport.

Plans

The terminal’s development plans feature comprehensive infrastructure improvements, including: Assessing technical, economic, and environmental factors for the project, Building safe access channels from the Atlantic Ocean to the terminal, Constructing quay walls, berths for ships, and specialized terminal facilities for efficient salt management and cargo handling and Upgrading transportation routes between Ada and major highways for better connectivity.

The collaboration will establish a Joint Project Development Team responsible for overseeing project execution, including stakeholder engagement and operational protocols. While McDan Group will manage the financial side of the project, GPHA will assist in acquiring necessary permits and approvals.

The project is expected to have a significant economic impact, with ElectroChem potentially producing over 2 million tonnes of salt annually, creating jobs, reducing salt imports, and improving the socio-economic conditions in Ada. This partnership reflects a critical step toward improving Ghana’s marine logistics infrastructure and promoting broader economic development.
