Ethiopian Airlines Group has announced plans to develop a mega airport city. The move aims to place Ethiopia as a global aviation hub.

The airline signed a technical advisory and consultancy contract with Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Shair and Partners) to oversee the design and supervision of the ambitious development. The project will be set up 40 kilometers from Addis Ababa.

Features

This state-of-the-art airport will have the capacity to serve 110 million passengers annually, a staggering fourfold increase over the capacity of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport. The Mega Airport City will encompass over 1.1 million square meters of terminal space, airline support facilities, cargo areas, and essential infrastructure. It will also feature environmentally responsible practices and innovative design elements reflecting Ethiopian heritage.

In the first phase, scheduled for completion by 2029, the airport is expected to handle 60 million passengers—triple the current capacity of Africa’s busiest airport, Bole International. Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tasew, emphasized the project’s role in boosting economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and further establishing Ethiopian Airlines as Africa’s most competitive aviation group.

“The project will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic growth and prioritize environmentally responsible practices in our country and beyond, reflecting the airline’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. With its exceptional capacity and world-class facilities, this new airport promises to elevate African aviation and strengthen partnerships, marking a significant advancement for the region’s air travel infrastructure,” said Tariq Al-Qanni, Dar’s Director of Operations in Ethiopia.
