Ethiopian Airlines has entered into a significant agreement with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to develop a new international airport in Ethiopia.
The dubbed Bishoftu International Airport, valued at $7.8 billion, will be located in Abusera, near Bishoftu in the Oromia region. Once completed, the airport is expected to handle up to 60 million passengers annually by 2040, a major increase from the current capacity of 17 million. This project is part of Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term strategy to strengthen its position as a leader in African aviation and enhance its global connectivity.
Economic development
The agreement was signed by Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, and Nnenna Nwabufo, Vice President for Regional Development, Integration, and Strategy at AfDB. Ethiopian Airlines has a rich history dating back to the 1940s and has played a crucial role in connecting African nations with the rest of the world.
The investment aligns with AfDB’s goal of improving regional integration, boosting economic development, and facilitating intra-African trade. The new airport is expected to serve as a major hub for both African and international travel, reinforcing Ethiopia’s strategic position in global aviation.
Ethiopian Airlines’ mission is to become the leading aviation group in Africa by providing safe and reliable passenger and cargo air transport, aviation training, flight catering, maintenance, repair, and overhaul services. The airline strives to be the airline of choice for customers, the employer of choice for employees, and an investment of choice for its owner, contributing positively to the socio-economic development of Ethiopia and the countries it operates in.
