The government of Ethiopia and AliExpress have partnered to expand e-commerce landscape. Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance, Semereta Sewasew held a strategic meeting with the Director of Key Accounts from Alibaba International Digital Commerce Group – AliExpress to form a collaboration that aims to foster job creation, forge local partnerships, and strengthen the country’s technological, logistics, and supply chain infrastructure.
During the meeting in Addis Ababa, Semereta Sewasew emphasized the transformative impact of e-commerce on economic growth and youth employment, highlighting the potential of digital platforms to open new opportunities for Ethiopian youth. “By harnessing platforms like AliExpress, we can expand job prospects for our young people, support innovation, and open new avenues for trade and investment,” she stated. “This partnership signals a strong commitment to establishing Ethiopia as a key player in the global e-commerce arena.”
Strategy
This partnership with AliExpress aligns with Ethiopia’s broader strategy to become a regional e-commerce hub. It complements projects such as Ethiopian Airlines’ new e-commerce hub, helping position Ethiopia as a logistics and trade center in East Africa. AliExpress is expected to enhance Ethiopia’s logistics framework by bringing global best practices in supply chain management, customs processing, and delivery efficiency, benefiting Ethiopia’s customs and logistics sectors.
Additionally, the government plans to streamline customs processes and improve trade facilitation, creating a supportive environment for both local and international e-commerce. This partnership with AliExpress also reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to supporting sustainable growth in the e-commerce sector.
AliExpress’s involvement presents Ethiopia with opportunities to strengthen its digital infrastructure, boost youth employment, and drive inclusive economic growth, paving the way for further digital innovation and development in the region.
