The government of Egypt is advancing the development of the integrated Sokhna–Alexandria container logistics hub, a key project aimed at strengthening the country’s position in global trade. This initiative is designed to create a seamless link between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, further solidifying Egypt’s status as a major logistics and trade hub.

The Ministry of Transport noted the first phase of the port’s expansion includes the Hutchison Container Terminal, where infrastructure work has been fully completed. Construction has now shifted to the superstructure, which includes the terminal yard, administrative buildings, and security fencing.

Covering an expansive 25 km², the port development project features five newly established basins and berths that span 18 km with a depth of 18 meters, ultimately extending the total berth length to 23 km. Additionally, cargo handling yards covering 8.6 km² are being built, increasing the total yard space to 10.6 km². To further support trade operations, logistics zones are being developed over an area of 6.3 km².

To enhance operational efficiency and connectivity, the project incorporates the construction of 30 km of railway lines for both electric and diesel trains, along with an internal road network consisting of 17 km of concrete-paved roads. These enhancements aim to minimize congestion and streamline cargo movement across port facilities. Moreover, wave barriers measuring a total of 3,270 meters are being installed to ensure optimal maritime operations.

As part of Egypt’s National Logistics Strategy, this large-scale initiative is focused on modernizing the country’s maritime transport infrastructure, reinforcing its ports as critical gateways for international trade and investment.
