Construction of Bagamoyo Port in Tanzania has been slated for next year 2023. The Director General of the Tanzania Port Authority (TPA), Plasduce Mbossa announced the project has been fixed for the next financial year.

Bagamoyo Port is planned to be one of the largest government infrastructure projects in the country. The port and its affiliate industrial zone is meant to address congestion at the old port and support Tanzania to become East Africa’s leading shipping and logistics centre.

Contracts to begin port construction were signed in October 2015 and was set to complete phase I of the construction project in 2017. The project was cancelled by a new government 3 months later in January 2016 and further experienced delays over the years.

When fully developed, the US $10billion project would have a capacity to handle 20 million TEUs by 2045 – 25 times the amount of cargo that Dar es Salaam port handles. It is projected to attract about 700 industries to become a strategic investment zone in East Africa. Director Mbossa also announced that a number of international companies have shown interest in developing and running the port.

“We are committed to building the port of Bagamoyo in an effort to reduce the congestion at the port of Dar es Salaam which is currently serving 17.025 million tons of cargo per year and attract our customers. As a country, we are doing our best to improve the various modes of transportation to provide opportunities for our customers to use the facilities at a lower cost. We are also working to create predictability when it comes to payments related to storage and withdrawals,” said Director Plasduce Mbossa.
