Construction works on the Abia State Airport in Nigeria is set to commence. Situated in the Nsulu clan of Isialangwa North Local Government Area, the airport aims to address a long-standing infrastructural gap, as Abia State currently lacks an operational airport. Residents have traditionally relied on the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for air travel, which underscores the importance of this new project in improving connectivity.
The proposed airport will feature a runway capable of accommodating larger aircraft, positioning it as a critical hub for transportation and economic growth. The project is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate the local economy, making it a transformative venture for Abia State.
Community support
Following engagements with the local community to resolve initial protests, the government secured approval for the site and committed to providing compensation for affected residents. This collaborative approach aims to ensure smooth progress for the project while fostering community support.
Nigeria boasts 32 airports, comprising 26 domestic and 6 international airports operated by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). In addition, the country has private airstrips, military airbases, and specialized heliports, reflecting a diverse aviation infrastructure. The Abia State Airport, backed by the Abia State Government in collaboration with the federal government, adds to this growing network and highlights a commitment to enhancing regional development and national connectivity.
