CMA CGM has announced the suspension of its proposed increase in shipping charges for cargo bound for Nigeria. The decision follows a 15% adjustment in Port & Marine Fees recently introduced by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

The French shipping company it would put the charge hike on hold and revert to the previous rates while ongoing discussions with local authorities continue. In a statement, the authority expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured customers that the company’s customer service team in Nigeria remains available to provide assistance.

Relief

The decision comes after opposition from licensed customs agents and freight forwarders. Mr. Amuni Riwane, National Protocol Officer of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), criticized the increase, stressing that it would worsen the already difficult economic situation. He confirmed that ANLCA’s ethics committee is engaging with CMA CGM to resolve the issue.

Additionally, Mr. Nnadi Ugochukwu, Head of the Department of Shipping and Terminals at the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders (NAGAFF), stated that while they had not been formally notified of the increase, they are prepared to engage with the company if needed. The suspension of the charge increase provides temporary relief to importers, but further updates are expected as discussions with the authorities progress.
