DP World has partnered with Mota-Engil, a well-established construction company, to lead the development of the Banana Port in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Situated in Kongo Central Province along the Atlantic coast, the port is expected to enhance the DRC’s position as a major trade hub. The project will provide modern infrastructure designed to lower business costs and increase the country’s trade capacity, strengthening economic independence.
Banana Port
The development will be carried out in phases. The first phase will include the construction of a 600-meter quay, capable of handling 450,000 TEUs per year, along with a 30-hectare storage area. This phase is designed to accommodate some of the largest vessels in the world. The second phase will extend the quay wall by more than two kilometers, further increasing the port’s handling capacity and efficiency.
The project is funded by DP World with support from British International Investment (BII), the U.K.’s development finance institution. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, highlighted the project’s significance in reshaping the DRC’s trade and logistics sector. He emphasized that the port would create new economic opportunities, generate employment, and improve trade efficiency, contributing to long-term economic growth for the DRC.
