The Nigerian government is actively promoting investments in the concessions of its major airports—Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. This initiative highlights the Nigerian government’s commitment to attracting investments, fostering public-private partnerships, and modernizing its aviation infrastructure to support economic growth and global connectivity.

This announcement was made by Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, at the Airline Economics Growth Frontiers Global event in Dublin, Ireland. Held from January 12 to 15 as part of Airline Economics Week, the event focuses on global trends in aviation, particularly in finance and asset leasing. Efforts are underway to expand Lagos and Abuja airports to boost capacity and enhance the passenger experience. The review of airport concession agreements aims to reduce operational bottlenecks and improve efficiency.

Aviation sector

Nigeria’s aviation sector has seen significant growth, driven by government efforts to modernize infrastructure and enhance safety. The country’s Cape Town Convention index has risen from 49 to 75.5, a reflection of improved confidence in aviation leasing.

The government has established platforms to unify aviation stakeholders and engage local financial institutions. A partnership with Boeing focuses on improving safety, operational efficiency, and capacity building, particularly in Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations.

Policies are aligned with fostering economic growth by positioning aviation as a critical economic driver. Collaboration with airlines, insurers, and regional banks has been emphasized to address systemic challenges and enhance industry sustainability.

“We hope that our demonstration of supporting economic growth, with aviation being a key factor, will open arms from the industry,” Keyamo said.
